I have been diving and doing underwater photography for almost 30 years. Living in southeast Florida provides year-round access to great diving locations.
My favorite type of photography is macro, where half the challenge is finding the small, unusual subjects. I especially like nudibranchs and find their variety of shapes, colors and habitats fascinating. My favorite places to dive are the Blue Heron Bridge (Riviera Beach, Florida), Indonesia and the Philippines, which are all treasure troves for macro subjects.
For the last four years I have been doing black water dives, which entail diving in the Gulf Stream, in 400 – 600 feet of water, at night and photographing all the weird and wonderful creatures that come up from the deep to feed. It is challenging photography, but literally is “a whole new world”.
I am currently using a Nikon D500 in a Nauticam housing with two Inon strobes. I generally use the 60mm macro lens, with a Nauticam CMC-1 diopter when appropriate.
